6th period
English Final
There are many characteristics of a true hero. A person goes through many adventures to become a hero. There are also stages to go through as a hero.
The separation. The person must find a reason to leave their comfort zone. In the “Beowulf” film, Beowulf must leave to go fight a dragon that has been terrorizing his village. He isn’t a man of hesitation, especially when it comes to the safety of his village. Once informed of the dragon, Beowulf was very courageous and went to the dragons layer to kill it.
Then there is the initiation. He goes to the unknown with a mentor and has a transformation. Although Beowulf didn’t have a mentor, he does have a right hand man. Wiglaf is a person that kind of helped, saw, and figured things out for Beowulf. During the initiation is the transformation, when Beowulf finally killed the dragon. It was a difficult fight for Beowulf but even with a broken arm, he killed the dragon.
The final stage would be the return. Beowulf, unfortunately, dies from his injuries while slaying the dangerous dragon. What he did achieve was a creation. He made a safer village for his people by killing the dragon. He also made all the gold the dragon was shielding available to the village. He didn’t get the opportunity to return to his village with pride for killing the dragon but he made a creation. The hero’s journey is a common theme of literature and film. Beowulf is a great example of this story. It shows what a person what must do to be considered a hero, a hero’s struggle, and their ending result.
