Beowulf final essay by Kayla Thomas

When a book is made into a film there are a lot of things that the editors for the movie leave out of the actual story line. They do this to shorten the story to ensure that the movie is not too long. There are many elements in the story of Beowulf that where left out of the movie.

For example, some of many differences are that in the book it stated that herothgar was friends with Beowulf’s father. In the movie however, that fact was never mentioned. Also, in the movie Beowulf slept with Grendel’s mother and bore a child which was portrayed as the dragon Beowulf fought towards the end of the story. But, in the book he actually killed Grendel’s mother and the dragon was just another random obstacle of Beowulf’s hero’s journey.

Even though there were many differences, there were also some few and slight similarities. In both the movie and book version Beowulf died in the battle with the dragon. He went to fight the dragon with wiglaf by his side. In both versions Beowulf make wiglaf the new king upon his death. There were also similarities in the reason why Grendel attacked heorot.

In conclusion, when comparing and contrasting the book from the movie of Beowulf It is easy to see the many differences from book to film due to editing. But for the movie they do keep some very important key events on the movie to make it still entertaining while also not losing the audience because they don’t get it.
