Finals Essay By: Rebekah Thebodeau

When comparing and contrasting the movie from the book there are a lot of differences, and very few similarities. This happens a lot when a book is changed into a movie.

I was able to find a lot of differences between the movie and the book. Like in the book Herothgar was friends with Beowulf’s father back in the day, they never mentioned that in the movie. Herot was made out of gold in the book and in the movie you couldn’t tell if it was or not (so I’m not %100 on if this is a difference or not). In the book the fight between Grendle and Beowulf, Beowulf stripped down to prove how strong he was in the book, but in the movie Beowulf was already nude. In the movie Beowulf mad e love to Grendle’s Mom, in the book Beowulf fought and killed her. Beowulf became king of Herot in the movie because Herothgar killed himself, and in the book he left Herot to go further his fame and go on more fantastic journeys. In the movie the dragon Beowulf kills is his son from the monster lady he boned down with, but in the book it was just your everyday dragon protecting his treasure.

Their where very few similarities between the book and the movie that I could find. In both the book and the movie, Grendle has a mother. Beowulf went to Herot, and fights Grendle in the nude. Beowulf rips off Grendles arm. Grendle’s mom gets mad and attacks Herot. Beowulf fights a dragon. Beowulf gives his gold to Wiglaf ( Beowulf’s B.F.F.). And Beowulf dies. These are the only ones I can think of at the moment.

So all in all the book and the movie are obviously different in many, many ways. But that’s okay ‘cause they’re both amazing stories, fun to read and watch.
